What Fire-Retardant Requirements Should You Check Before Buying a COB LED Display?

When buyers compare a COB LED display, they usually check pixel pitch, brightness, refresh rate, cabinet size and price.

Fire safety is often checked much later.

This can be a mistake, especially when the LED screen will be installed inside a shopping mall, airport, exhibition hall, control room, hotel or other public area.

A COB LED display contains PCB boards, plastic parts, cables, power supplies, connectors and cabinet materials. If one of these parts uses unsuitable material, heat or an electrical fault may create a higher fire risk.

For this reason, buyers should not simply ask:

“Is this COB LED display fireproof?”

A better question is:

Which parts use fire-retardant materials, what standard was tested, and can the supplier provide supporting documents?

Why Fire Safety Matters for a COB LED Display

A large LED screen may operate for 10 or more hours every day.

Inside the cabinet, power supplies continuously convert AC input into low-voltage DC power. At the same time, LED modules, receiving cards and cables generate heat.

Under normal operating conditions, this heat should remain within the designed range.

Problems can appear when there is:

  • an overloaded power cable;

  • a loose terminal;

  • a damaged connector;

  • poor ventilation;

  • an unsuitable power supply;

  • excessive dust;

  • or a short circuit.

A good fire-safety design cannot guarantee that an electrical fault will never happen. Its purpose is to reduce the possibility that a small electrical or thermal problem develops into a larger fire.

This is especially important for an indoor COB LED screen installed close to visitors, walls or interior decoration.

Check the Fire Rating of Plastic Materials

One of the first items to check is the plastic used inside the LED display.

Plastic may appear in module structures, connectors, insulation parts and other components.

UL 94 is one commonly referenced flammability standard for plastic materials used in electrical and electronic products.

Common classifications include HB, V-2, V-1 and V-0.

For vertical testing, V-0 has stricter limits on burning time and does not permit flaming particles to ignite the cotton indicator below the specimen. However, the exact rating must be checked together with material thickness because the same material can receive different ratings at different thicknesses.

Therefore, do not accept a specification that only says:

“Material: UL94 V-0.”

Ask for more information:

What exact material was tested? At what thickness? Which component uses this material?

This makes the requirement much more useful during purchasing.

Do Not Check Only the LED Module

Many buyers focus only on whether the COB module is fire-retardant.

But fire safety should cover the complete electrical path.

Important components include:

Power Cables

The cable conductor size should match the expected current.

If a cable is too small for the load, resistance can generate excessive heat.

Cable insulation should also meet the safety requirements required by the project or local regulations.

Power Supplies

The quality of the LED power supply is very important.

A reliable power supply should include appropriate protection functions such as over-current protection, short-circuit protection and over-temperature protection where applicable.

The buyer should also check whether the power supply certificates match the destination market.

Connectors and Terminals

Loose terminals are easy to overlook.

Poor contact increases resistance at the connection point. A small connector can therefore become much hotter than the surrounding cable.

For large COB LED display screens, connector quality and correct crimping are just as important as the cable itself.

PCB and Insulation Materials

Ask the manufacturer about the PCB material, insulation layers and relevant fire-performance information.

The goal is not to collect as many certificates as possible.

The goal is to confirm that the actual materials used in production match the materials described in the technical documents.

Check the Metal Cabinet and Internal Layout

Most COB LED display cabinets use metal structures such as die-cast aluminum or sheet metal.

Metal does not create the same flammability concern as plastic, but cabinet design still affects fire safety.

A crowded internal layout can trap heat around the power supply and cables.

Before buying, check whether there is enough space around heat-generating components and whether cables are routed away from sharp edges or high-temperature areas.

For front-maintenance COB displays, also check whether technicians can access power and signal connections without pulling or damaging nearby cables.

Good maintenance access reduces the chance of creating electrical problems during repeated servicing.

Ask for Test Reports, Not Only Certificate Logos

This is one of the most important purchasing checks.

A product brochure may contain CE, UL or other certification logos, but the logo alone does not tell you exactly what was tested.

Ask the supplier for the relevant report or certificate.

Then confirm:

  • manufacturer name;

  • product or material model;

  • applicable standard;

  • test laboratory;

  • issue date;

  • component covered by the report;

  • and whether the tested model matches your order.

You should also distinguish between a material flammability rating and certification for the complete product.

For example, a plastic part having a UL 94 rating does not automatically mean the complete LED display has the same fire classification.

Perform a Heat Check Before Shipment

Documents are important, but physical testing should also be part of quality control.

One useful method is a long-duration power-on test.

Operate the COB LED screen under a realistic high-load image and check temperatures around:

  • power supplies;

  • power terminals;

  • cable connectors;

  • PCB power inputs;

  • and cabinet ventilation areas.

A thermal camera can make abnormal hot spots easier to identify.

If one connector is much hotter than identical connectors nearby, technicians should investigate the terminal pressure, cable size, crimp quality and current distribution.

The purpose is not simply to record the highest temperature.

The important point is to find unusual temperature differences before shipment.

Example: Indoor COB LED Wall for a Public Lobby

Consider a fine-pitch COB LED display installed in a hotel or commercial lobby.

The screen may run from morning until late evening.

Before shipment, the customer should confirm the fire-retardant properties of relevant plastic components, inspect cable specifications, review the power supply documentation and perform a continuous operating test.

During testing, technicians should also inspect electrical connections for unusual heat.

This process adds more value than simply asking whether the screen is “fire-resistant.”

It creates a traceable checklist from material selection to final testing.

FAQ

Is UL94 V-0 required for every COB LED display?

Not necessarily. Requirements depend on the product design, installation environment, destination country and project specification. Buyers should first confirm applicable local standards and then check which components need a particular rating.

Does a metal cabinet make an LED screen fireproof?

No.

The cabinet may be metal, but cables, connectors, PCB materials and internal electrical components still need to be considered.

Is a CE certificate enough to prove fire resistance?

Not by itself.

You should check which directives, standards and tests are covered by the supplied documentation and whether they apply to the exact product being purchased.

Should fire safety be checked before production?

Yes.

Fire-retardant material requirements should be written into the technical specification or BOM before mass production. It is much harder to change cables, plastics or power components after the complete screen has already been produced.

How Toosen Controls COB LED Display Safety

At Toosen, fire-safety requirements are considered together with electrical design, cabinet structure, thermal management and component selection.

Before a COB LED display enters production, customers can confirm important specifications such as module materials, power supplies, cables, connectors and cabinet structure.

For projects with specific fire-retardant or certification requirements, these requirements should be discussed before production so that suitable materials and components can be selected.

Before shipment, electrical connections and operating temperatures can also be checked during screen testing.

When purchasing a COB LED display, do not judge fire safety from one label or one sentence in a brochure.

Check the material, component, standard, report and actual operating condition together.

That gives you a much clearer picture of how the LED display will perform after installation.
