2026 Mid-Year Review: The Year Spherical LED Displays Went Global

Release time:2026-07-21

The first half of 2026 will be remembered as the year spherical LED displays transitioned from novelty to necessity.

Here‘s what happened.

January: Guangzhou Announces a Mega-Sphere

A proposal was signed off for the Guangzhou Pearl Spherical Giant Screen — a 66-meter-high, 88-meter-diameter LED sphere with 5,000-person capacity. The project signals China’s ambition to compete with — and potentially surpass — the Las Vegas Sphere.

May: Tiangong Nova Opens in Qianjiang

The Tiangong Nova opened in Hubei province, featuring a 7,500-square-meter exterior LED display and a 3,200-square-meter interior screen supporting 16K visuals. The venue has commissioned original content from Oscar-winning director Ang Lee. At roughly four-tenths the height and one-third the width of the Las Vegas Sphere, it proves that spherical venues can be scaled for regional markets.

June: A 5-Meter Interactive Sphere Wows World Cup Fans

In Dallas, a 5-meter interactive LED sphere became the centerpiece of the World Cup Fan Festival. Fans uploaded photos via QR code and watched them appear on the sphere in near real-time. The installation demonstrated that spherical displays are no longer just for permanent landmarks — they work for temporary events too.

July: Shanghai Announces a 1.2 Billion Yuan Sphere

Shanghai confirmed plans for the West Bund Starry Sky 360° spherical venue, with a budget of 1.2 billion yuan (approximately $177 million) and completion targeted for the end of 2027.

What This Means

The first half of 2026 tells a clear story: spherical LED displays are moving from niche to mainstream.

  • Scale is diversifying. From 88-meter mega-spheres to 5-meter event installations, the format works at every size.

  • Applications are expanding. Permanent landmarks, touring events, retail installations — spheres are proving their versatility.

  • Investment is accelerating. Multiple billion-yuan projects signal serious commercial confidence.

The Bottom Line

If 2023 was the year the world discovered spherical LED displays, 2026 is the year the world started buying them.
